Denis Shapovalov captured his first ATP Tour title on Sunday, at the Intrum Stockholm Open. Shapovalov, playing in the first final of his career (0-7 semi-finals), defeated Filip Krajinovic in straight sets behind some tactical tennis. Coach Mikhail Youzhny seems to have struck a chord with the 20-year-old Canadian, and has the the young lefty mixing it up more than ever before.
Caty McNally and Coco Gauff (McCoco as they’re commonly referred) won their second career WTA title in Luxembourg. The duo is now 12-2 in doubles action and has captured three titles, the 2018 junior U.S. Open, Winston Salem 2019, and Sunday’s title in Luxembourg. The teenage pairing has been competing like crazy and producing very good results since teaming up in juniors. Gauff also recently won her first singles title earlier this month in Austria (Linz Open), and continues to be one of the biggest storylines in tennis. It’s been a crazy year for the 15-year-old Gauff and 17-year-old McNally.
Andy Murray won the European Open in Antwerp, Belgium over Stan Wawrinka in a third set thriller, on Sunday. Murray hadn’t won a title since Dubai in 2017 and after watching him lose at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati (August) to Gasquet, it looked like his time on tour as a champion was long gone. He looked he had lost the edge that made him so tough, but Andy Murray is as resilient as they come. He is back in the winner’s circle, a place he wasn’t sure he would ever return. Comeback story of the year? I think so.
